time to talk poop
« on: November 20, 2011, 11:08:16 AM »
Hi Everyone!

I am hoping to move out to Toronto in the next couple of years, currently living in London in the UK but I don't see a future here.

One question my wife and I can't answer just yet is what to do with a bathroom if we are off grid and away from any central plumbing?

I have had experience only with a Clivus composting toilet whilst working at a summer camp in NY State when I was younger.

The only issue with this is that someone has to shovel it out and dispose of it somewhere, was wondering what most people choose when normal public pipe routes aren't an option?

Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,

Most country dwellers have a septic tank/leeching bed system. Basically, all the grey water goes into a septic tank where enzymes break down the solids and then it leeches back out into the ecosystem through a series of perforated pipes underground.

Here's a link that explains it in detail: http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/gemare/gemare_009.cfm

Composting toilets are kind of neat. I just don't see them as being really necessary. Especially with the Canadian winter.

What draws you to the Toronto area? There's much cheaper land elsewhere in Canada. You'd have at least a 2 hour commute everyday to work in Toronto and have affordable land of any size.
